So so easy, fun and rewarding to go organic. There are more ways to get your family growing and eating fresh organic, home grown foods than you would have ever thought possible
Another home delivery service in Melbourne that I use is The Organic Empire. The produce is the freshest I have ever had and they have so many organic grocery lines as well. The service I receive is delightful.
They don’t deliver to your door, but instead has a local pick up point in each suburb on delivery day, which is really easy.
I like it because all the food is sourced close to Brisbane, reducing the ‘carbon miles’ your food travels before arriving on your table. This is becoming increasingly important as supermarkets now source produce further away, sometimes overseas, which increases the energy used for transportation dramatically (not to mention keeping it in cold storage to prolong the life of a product). The food tastes even better because I know I am supporting local farmers AND working against climate change.
Educate the kids by feeding them the knowledge of probiotic foods and their health benefits. Let tomorrow’s generation be healthier and stronger enough.
I get my organic and biodynamic fruit and vegetable plus herbs and other ‘dry goods’ box from the Organics Box in Geelong. They are a husband/wife team who source seasonal produce locally and have a philosophy of encouraging awareness. They have a collection service, which is great for me as I can do my daily exercise and walk there to pick up my pre ordered box.
I know they offer a shared collection scheme whereby people in the same area (for example Torquay or Ocean Grove) share collection of their box so that they take it in turns to collect each others boxes. It’s a great idea and they are really friendly and always go out of their way to assist and make their service as convenient as possible. I’ve often gone to collect my box and had some really great conversations with other people who live in the area. It’s a great way to connect with community. It’s also the cheapest and yummiest fruit and veg I’ve come across in Geelong.
Make something for them that look really very delicious but very healthy and organic. And introduce to the kids as early as you can what is good and what is bad.
My son used to love organic red beets (pureed) when he was an adventurous 1 1/2 year old. We’ve got some great pictures of him (blond hair, blue eyes, fair skin) with lots of deep red beets on his face – he always managed to eat only about 50% of what was on his spoon, the rest he wore on his face, hands and clothes. Funnily enough at the tender age of 3, he decided he hated beets and didn’t touch them again for 20 years. He’s 28 years old now and loves a good beet salad, but still won’t eat beets warm!
This recipe sounds delicious. I’m always looking for new dishes that are pure and healthy. I’d like to share an allergy-free recipe that can also be made with organic ingredients. It’s a healthy apple crisp dessert.
Great post there! yes it’s important to start a child on organic food early in life. Nowadays there are so much harmful chemicals in food that are creating sickness, allergies and behavioural problems in kids..it’s really sad
I’m amazed and happy to see how many parents are warming up to organic -it’s great! I’m 42 years old and my mother raised me on organic food and holistic beliefs. At the time it really wasn’t so acceptable. Kids where a little cruel at lunch time, I had brown bologna, they had artificially pink bologna. My mother didn’t really explain this enough so my advice would be…keep them informed on why we eat organic. They’re a lot smarter than we think!
Indeed, Olive oils bring healthier effects to our lifestyle. It is one of the best substitute to Palm-oil farming. I recently discovered this product called Bio Leaf. Made from Ogliarola olives in the heart of Puglia Italy, Bio Leaf is the quintessential Italian extra virgin olive oil. Perfect for salads and pasta Bio Leaf will bring big Italian taste to any meal. What started as a family farm has turned into the most luxurious oil money can buy and is perfect for the most elegant of kitchens. With a bottle good enough for a perfume, Bio Leaf will take your breath away.
When cooking organic food to kids, it is necessary to make it look nice, just like cooking any other kind of food! The trick is to get them to eat organic food from early ages, so they can get used to the flavour!
You know what I find really funny?
Water is such a simple thing, and before we realised, it was transformed and now we’ve got sparkling water, natural water, tap water… and they all taste differently!
I remember when I was a kid, how I hated vegetables (organic or non-organic, there was no distinction yet back then). But now, towards college, I fell in love with gardening and love vegetables and herbs the most.
One good tip I learned is not to force children to do something they don’t want. Because the more we do, the more they will repel it. Instead of pushing, leave them with no other choice. If they don’t want to eat veggies or any organic foods, let them be. But don’t give them something else to eat either. And of course, make sure that everybody else is eating and enjoying the food so they might consider trying it out.
I have found that buying organic has saved me money irrespective of the price differences… I actually shop a lot wiser and nothing goes to waste due to the quality and freshness. I also believe when you have made the decision to go Organic then I assume most people have made that choice due to being educated enough to know that all other inorganic foods are really not “food” and are bad for your health …. irrespective of my budget I will always buy Organic.
It’s funny I didn’t go to Organics because I had health problems or was talked into it … I was studying Nutrition it was when I started to research some of the assignments and questions that I began reading huge amounts of information now available via the internet. As the Nutrition course and me didn’t really agree I dropped the course and still continue to research daily everything I can find on Health and “Correct Nutrition” As for weight loss … well haven’t the big companies jumped on the bandwagon with supplements and “superfoods”. All you ever need to lose weight is wholesome organic food and watch that you don’t over eat – Never eat more than you can expend basically. But I have found a wholesome way of eating is really quite filling. Every meal comprises of mainly protein with lots of fruit and vegies. I never eat food out of a tin, packet, pre-made etc. I only eat what I buy and make.
Is there research out there that can substantiate that organic foods keep more of their nutirent content v. conventional since most are sold (often times underripe) soon after they are picked, i.e., organic bananas?
A great informative article about water and how it affects us. It is great to advocate BPA free drink bottles, because what is the point of having beautiful chemical free water if you put it into a regular plastic bottle that can leach BPA, and phthalates into the water
Thanks for the great tips. We have been forced to eat organically because of health issues. Which is good but I wish that I would have been able to do it years ago when I wanted to. I have been dreaming about having an organic garden. I don’t think I can dig in our yard as we live in a rented house. Perhaps I will try containers on the deck though. That is a great idea!
I absolutley agree with you Scott. I have met alot of people who have this exact same concern. Everyone wants to eat healthy, but nobody wants to actually PAY for it. However there have been some studies done recently that despite the recession people are still willing to pay for healthy food.
The tastes that are added in processed foods — MSG, sweeteners — trigger addictive responses. It’s not that organic food tastes bad, it’s that it tastes different from the processed foods, and even pets need their food to taste the same all the time. The best way to get kids to eat organic is to only eat organic, not to mix it in with a Happy Meal.
After all, kids in India eat spicy food, kids in China eat Chinese food. They eat what they are used to eating.
A potentially negative side effect of this change in certification is that it would increase minimum order quantities i.e. airfreight is often the only viable option for smaller orders as perversely transportation by ship is often more expensive for low order amounts. Also the policy does assume that air freighted goods have a higher carbon footprint than all alternatives (i.e. shipping methods that aren’t penalised). This is definitely not the case… in fact there was an example recently cited of lamb flown in from New Zealand to the UK having a smaller footprint than lamb transported by road from within the UK!
Good article…its very important to drink quality water to stay healthy because many diseases come from drinking polluted water like jaundice. I try to drink only Organic water to keep myself healthy.
hey you have listed nice points but it sometimes hard to follow. My child does not eat those food which he does not like, even after serving him again and again…so i try to serve him natural & healthy food that is liked by him. According to me, he is getting full nutrition throw my my served food as i stick to serve him more & more Organic Food.
Cheers
The decision to give your children organic foods or not is a very personal one. You should do it or not do it based upon your ability to do so and your thoughts about it. Don’t feel pressured into doing so because your doctor or family tells you that you should do so. If it is something you feel strongly about then don’t let other people talk you out of it. Do what you feel is best for your children so you can feel good about your role as a parent.
Thanks for all of your comments, I have updated the post to include the extra areas mentioned. Feel free to add a comment if you want to promote the organic delivery company you use, whether it is in Australia or further afield.

I use Food Connect in Brisbane

Is there any online video to train up parents related to this topic? There could be a hugh market demand in China (translated).

The Organic Grocer is another home delivery service. They look after Sydney, Central Coast, Penrith and The Blue Mountians.
They provide deliveries twice a week to sydney suburbs and use refrigerated vans to transport the organic food with.

hope you like it! enjoy.
*LOL* Kris, my son is 18 months old and he LOVES red beets
I hope he continues to do so beyond the age of 3!
I have a 16 year old daughter that loves beet salad but ironically she never used to eat it when I would give it to her in her baby years.

I don’t know, but this worked for my kids.
What really inclines me towards organic food is they are free from all sorts of pesticides.
I just saw this trailer for a documentary about bottled water called “tapped” looks awesome. It’s a sad state of affairs we are in in our society.
Use Organic Box in Adelaide….brilliant!

great post! i’m all for farmers’ markets and have recently discovered how easy it is to grow my own veggies!

Another Adelaide business is Unley Organic Food – free home delivery to inner south east suburbs. Mixed boxes are $45 and are great value. Delicious!
I have a veggie garden and it’s really fun to be harvesting fruits and vegetables right from my own garden, it’s very fulfilling!
